Access to MalariaGEN genotype data
The primary purpose of Phase 1 of MalariaGEN is to identify genetic variants which confer protection against, or increase the susceptibility to, the onset of severe malaria, through implementation and analysis of large-scale genome-wide association studies. Additional objectives include the identification and understanding of challenges faced in the conduct of large-scale genetic epidemiological studies in the context of African and other malaria-endemic countries.
The Consortium anticipates that data generated from the project will be used by others, such as required for developing new analytical methods, in understanding patterns of polymorphism and in guiding selection of markers to map genes involved in specific diseases.
Access to individual-level genotype data is available by application to the MalariaGEN Independent Data Access Committee. Access to data will be granted to qualified investigators for appropriate use. For further information please see the MalariaGEN Data Release Policy.
Data available
Data are available on the following samples using the 500K Affymetrix chip:
- 1059 samples from cases of severe malaria from The Gambia
- 1496 cord blood control samples from The Gambia
One set of genotypes is available for each of these, called by Chiamo as discussed and used in the analysis by the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium (WTCCC).
Further datasets from malaria-endemic countries will be released over the next 18 months.
How to apply
Please refer to the Guidelines for Access to MalariaGEN Data for further information and for details on how to apply for access to the data.
The online Application Form for access to the data should be completed. Any queries regarding access procedures or completion of the forms should be sent to malariagen-idac@ethox.ox.ac.uk.
The application should be accompanied by a signed MalariaGEN Data Access Agreement [DOC|PDF]. This must include a signature from the Head of Institute or person with the appropriate institutional or administrative authority. A signed hard copy of the agreement should be faxed to Dr S Bull at +44 (0) 1865 287884 and then posted to :

Applications for access to data can be submitted at any time. The MalariaGEN Independent Data Access Committee will consider straightforward applications on a rolling basis and aim to provide a decision within 2 months of receipt. Applications which require further consideration will be referred to the next Committee meeting for discussion.
