Lab Team

The lab team is responsible for secure archival of samples, for driving forward large-scale genotyping and sequencing experiments, and for supporting MalariaGEN investigators in laboratory methods and data management.

About the team

The lab team is part of the MalariaGEN resource centre.  It is based at two locations: at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford, and at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge.

The team's work, led by Kirk Rockett, is wide-ranging.  MalariaGEN investigators have contributed more than 50,000 samples to Consortial Projects, and all of these have to go through quality control procedures and then to be securely archived. The team also helps MalariaGEN investigators and data fellows to curate the clinical and epidemiological information that is provided with the samples.  They are responsible for the technical design and operational management of large-scale genotyping and sequencing experiments that are carried out in the different Consortial Projects.

Members of the team provide training and support for researchers from MalariaGEN partner institutions, and where necessary travel to study sites in malaria-endemic countries to troubleshoot problems in laboratory methods and clinical data management.
