Publications
MalariaGEN plans to publish several manuscripts based on its genotype data, focusing on the following areas:
- Genetic association studies of malaria, including SNPs, haplotypes and structural variants
- Population structure, including markers and methods of dealing with structure in genetic association studies
- Patterns of linkage disequilibrium and haplotype structure, including population differences
- Signatures of natural selection
The release of pre-publication data from large resource-generating scientific projects was the subject of a meeting held in January 2003 - the 'Fort Lauderdale meeting', sponsored by the Wellcome Trust. The report from this meeting can be viewed here. MalariaGEN has agreed to follow the data-release principles described in the report of the meeting.
The recommendations of the Fort Lauderdale meeting addressed the interests of data users in terms of rapid access to data, and the need of data producers to receive recognition for their work. The meeting defined 'responsible use' as allowing the data producers to have the opportunity to publish the initial analyses of the data. MalariaGEN, as a data producer, aims to publish the results of the analyses outlined above. We ask other users to respect this and refrain from publishing analyses of these questions, which use the MalariaGEN data, prior to the initial MalariaGEN publications on these questions.
