The Faculty of Tropical Medicine at Mahidol University, Thailand, is one of the premier research institutes in tropical-disease-endemic countries, carrying out teaching, research and medical care in a 250-bed hospital. The Faculty contains a Wellcome Trust Unit that is closely associated with the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit at the Mae Sot Hospital in Mae Sot near the western border of Thailand, the Sappasitprasong Hospital in Ratchatani Province and several hospitals in the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Achievements in malaria research have included the discovery of cholorquine-resistant falciparum malaria; testing the combination of antimalarial drugs with artesunate, a derivative of a Chinese herb, qinghaosu, as a potential antimalarial therapy; and studies of the of the metabolism and pharmacokinetics of antimalarials to find an optimum dose for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
