Funders

MalariaGEN was established in 2005 after receiving a large grant from the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative to undertake a focused programme of work entitled 'Learning from the human genome how protective immunity against malaria works'.

The Grand Challenges in Global Health grant is funded from two sources. 50% is from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is administered by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health. The other 50% is from the Wellcome Trust.

A substantial part of the informatic infrastructure that underpinned the formation of MalariaGEN was developed with funding from the MRC and the Gates Foundation. The programme is also complemented by funding from several other sources: the Wellcome Trust is contributing funding for genome-wide association analysis through the core funding of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Wellcome Trust Case-Control Consortium; the Medical Research Council is contributing through an MRC Programme Grant; the European Union BioMalPar Network supports some integrating activities.
