Julie Makani is a Wellcome Trust Training Fellow at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. She has focussed on Sickle Cell Disease, which is a major problem in East Africa. The incidence of Sickle Cell disease is directly related to malaria as the disease confers protection against the malaria infection.
