The malaria research unit at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, School of Medical Sciences, has specialist paediatricians based at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which has around 900 paediatric admissions annually classified as having severe malaria. The University is co-sponsor of the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine, which functions as a research platform for international projects with the Ghanaian Ministry of Health and the Bernhard Nocht Institute of Hamburg, Germany.

How the team have contributed to MalariaGEN
Professor Agbenyega and his team are recruiting children with severe/cerebral malaria and matching cord blood controls for Consortial Project 1.
685 existing family trios were contributed from a existing study conducted in collaboration with the Bernard Nocht Institute in Hamburg, Germany.
In addition, the team at Kumasi have almost completed the recruitment of 1200 new cases, 2500 new controls and 800 family trios through the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
