MalariaGEN Investigator - Nadira Karunweera

Professor Nadira Karunaweera is the Chair and Head of the Malaria Research Unit and Department of Parasitology at the University of Colombo and is a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, USA.

She is a medical graduate with a PhD in human malaria, more specifically on clinical disease, pathogenesis and immunology. She has over 18 years of experience working in malaria research in national and international contexts.

At the national level, Prof Karunaweera has engaged in research on malaria in wide-ranging fields. These include clinical studies, studies on pathogenesis and epidemiology, immunological and molecular aspects of disease including vaccine research, studies on genetic diversity and population structure of parasites, drug resistance and on the health system in relation to disease control. At the international level, she has experience in tropical disease research and has served on local and international boards as an expert in the field.
