National Institute for Biological Standards and Control
UK
The National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) is managed by the National Biological Standards Board to safeguard and advance public health by assuring the quality and safety of biologicals. The Institute is currently the world's major producer and distributor of WHO International Standards and reference materials (supplying over 95% of Standards). The Institute provides independent testing of biological medicines for the UK market - in particular, vaccines for the UK children's vaccination programme - and operates as an Official Medicines Control Laboratory of the European Union for release of medicines onto the EU market. There is also a very strong international dimension to the Institute's work, through interactions with WHO and with the European Community.
