Resource centre statistics team

The statistics team performs quantitative genomics data analysis and research for MalariaGEN consortial projects, and supports MalariaGEN investigators and data fellows to analyse their data and design new studies, through one-to-one assistance and training workshops.

About the team

The statistics team is part of the MalariaGEN resource centre.  The team is based at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford and at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge.

The team has experience in most aspects of medical statistics, statistical and population genetics, and computational biology.  A major area of the team's work is the design and analysis of genome-wide association studies in different populations.  This involves complex analyses on very large amounts of data, and presents a number of problems that are not easily solved by current methods, requiring the development of new analytical approaches and statistical algorithms.  As an example, the great genetic diversity of African populations presents  considerable challenges in the design and analysis of the genome-wide association studies that MalariaGEN is carrying out in Consortial Project 1.  The team has developed new methods and software for high-throughput genotype calling, for statistical determination of true trios, and for analysis of differences in linkage disequilibrium between populations.
