The mission at the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI) is to conduct world-class research to discover new preventive measures against human diseases, including vaccines, new or improved drug targets or treatments and new diagnostic tools. Over 160 scientists, ranging from undergraduate students to postdoctoral fellows to principal investigators, work at SBRI and are involved in activities ranging from fundamental research to genome sequencing to vaccine trials. Fifteen principal investigators lead laboratories and each of these have a specific research focus.

The Institute's Malaria Program team are investigating potential targets for malaria vaccines. They conduct clinical research studies in Morogoro and Muheza, Tanzania, to define the causes of malarial disease in pregnant women and children, and to develop and test new vaccines and drugs for these vulnerable populations. The International Malaria Research Training Program is also based in Seattle and Tanzania.
