The Developmental Medicine Paediatrics/Immunology research group in the Medical School at the University of Swansea is interested in childhood immunity, including probiotics as modulators of immunity. The team is undertaking a randomised clinical trial in infants to study the effects of a probiotic nutritional supplement on immune response and the development of atopy.
In previous studies based in the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford, the protective effect of alpha+-thalassaemia against severe malaria was demonstrated in a case-control study of children living in the North Coastal region of Papua New Guinea. The team at the University of Swansea works closely with the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research and the University of Oxford.
