Tsiri Agbenyega is a former Dean of the Medical School in Kumasi, Ghana. Trained as a physiologist, he is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and a Principal Medical Officer in the Department of Child Health. He heads the malaria research unit at Komfo-Anokye Hospital. Tsiri's work includes randomised controlled intervention studies in severe and uncomplicated malaria, as well as genetic and patho-physical studies of severe malaria. He has been involved in malaria research since 1993 and is a founding member of the Severe Malaria in African Children Network (SMAC), which is continuing to develop a robust phenotype for severe malaria (a vital tool in genetic association studies that allows comparison of data across different study sites and in different populations). He is also a Principal Investigator for both the Phase II and Phase III trials of the malaria candidate vaccine RTS,S.
