Wenner-Gren Institute, University of Stockholm
Sweden
The Wenner-Gren Institute is a large, semi-autonomous Institute within the University of Stockholm. It contains a malaria unit with more than 20 people experienced in cellular and molecular immunology, molecular biology, cell biology and immunogenetics working closely with geneticists who have been researching the A. gambiae mosquito and P. berghei malaria parasite.
The Department of Immunology works on immunoregulatory and immune evasion mechanisms. A particular discovery was the first demonstration of the induction of different T-cell subsets during malaria in humans, and the revelation that these responses were genetically regulated. The Wenner-Gren Institute works closely with the Malaria Research and Training Unit at the University of Bamako in Mali.
