The threat of drug-resistant malaria looms in Southeast Asia

NBC News’ Ian Williams visited Dr François Nosten to discuss the threat posed by artemisinin resistance. Nosten, who runs the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit, a part of the Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine, described how slow parasite clearance time provides alarming evidence that resistance is developing to artemisinin, the current frontline treatment for malaria, and reiterates the need to work quickly to defeat drug-resistant malaria.
