Local Projects

MalariaGEN partners across 14 malaria-endemic countries have worked with local communities to recruit over 50,000 samples in the last 4 years. Each partner has designed and implemented their own local research studies into the natural mechanisms of resistence to malaria.

Consortial Project 1

For MalariaGEN's Consortial Project 1 partners in eleven malaria endemic countries have recruited severe malaria cases and healthy controls for local research and consortial genome-wide association studies. The following descriptions provide information on study sites and populations:

  • Burkina Faso: Centre National de Recherche et de Formation sur le Paludisme. More>>
  • Cameroon: University of Buea. More>>
  • Gambia: Medical Research Council Laboratories. More>>
  • Ghana: Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research with Navrongo Health Research Centre. More>>
  • Malawi: Blantyre Malaria Project with Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme. More>>
  • Mali: Malaria Research and Training Centre, University of Bamako. More>>
  • Nigeria: Institute of Child Health, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan More>>
  • Papua New Guinea: Papua New Guinea Institute for Medical Research. More>>
  • Tanzania: Joint Malaria Programme, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. More>>
  • Vietnam: Oxford University Clinical Research Unit. More>>

Consortial Project 2

MalariaGEN's Consortial Project 2 aims to understand the functional effects of genetic variation on the immune response to malaria. Eight partners in malaria-endemic countries are involved. The following study descriptions provide information on populations, morbidity and infection densities:

  • Burkina Faso: Centre National de Recherche et de Formation sur le Paludisme. More>>
  • Mali: The University of Bamako has two different CP2 study projects at Manteourou More>> and Pongonon More>>
  • Tanzania: The Joint Malaria Programme, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre recruited samples from cross-sectional surveys at two different altitudes. More>>
  • Tanzania: The National Institute for Medical Research recruited samples from eight villages in the Muheza district. More>>
  • Senegal: The Institut Pasteur de Dakar recruited samples from a long-term longitudinal study in two communities. More>>
  • Sri Lanka: The University of Colombo is following up on a cohort study with active case dectection carried out in 1992/3. More>>
