How to submit samples to a partner study

This page explains how to submit Plasmodium or Anopheles samples to our sequencing and genotyping pipelines. This information is intended only for our partners with existing partner studies and associated Study ID(s).

If you do not have a collaboration agreement with MalariaGEN, or if you wish to submit samples under a new collaboration and Study ID, you will first need to email support [at] to discuss your intended study and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Flow chart: How to submit samples to a partner study

This flow chart provides an overview of the process for submitting samples to a partner study.

You can also download the flow chart as a PDF.

All samples must be covered by a collaboration agreement and associated with a Study ID.

When submitting samples, you must:

  • Submit two copies of the completed sample information sheet
  • Provide samples that meet our requirements (described below)

Sample information sheets (SISs)

We cannot accept any samples without first receiving a fully completed sample information form. We require two completed copies of this form: an electronic copy that must be emailed to samples [at] before shipping samples, and a printed copy that must be included within the sample shipment.

Each sample information sheet is an excel file that contains three tabs:

  1. An ‘Instructions’ tab, providing guidance on how to complete each sample metadata column
  2. An ‘Anopheles/Plasmodium Samples’ tab that must be fully completed for each sample
  3. A ‘Location’ tab that must be fully completed for all samples

You can also download a copy of the relevant instructions here:

We cannot accept samples unless all mandatory metadata columns are completed in the sample information sheet. If you have any queries about metadata requirements, please email samples [at]

Sample requirements

We can accept either DNA samples (Plasmodium and Anopheles) or dried blood spot filter paper samples (Plasmodium); all samples must adhere to the relevant requirements outlined below. If you have any questions regarding how to submit samples or if your samples do not meet our requirements, please email samples [at]

DNA samples

To be accepted into the pipeline we require 200ng DNA in 100ul. We prefer the DNA samples to be sent in 1.5ml DNA Lobind Eppendorf tubes (catalogue number 0030 108.051). Samples in 96 well plates are also acceptable. If you decide for well plates, we prefer that you use AB-2800 clear 96 well skirted Super plate PCR from Abgene AB2800, although other types of 96 well plates are acceptable too.

We cannot accept any alternatives (cryovials, deep well plates, etc). If you have any difficulty sourcing, or any questions about the Eppendorf tubes or 96 well plates we require, please email samples [at]

Filter paper samples

Dried blood spot filter papers* should be packed in a zip lock bag with desiccant (e.g. silica gel).

* We recommend Non Indicating FTA miniCard from GE healthcare life sciences WB120088

All samples must be shipped to:
