This study proposes to generate a global understanding of how pathogens adapt to new environments, using Plasmodium vivax as model system, by using technology in the field of genomics, population genetics, informatics and evolution.
The first AIM of this proposal is to study the “intertwined” host-pathogen evolutionary histories of humans and great apes and of P. vivax and P. vivax-like. The second AIM is to characterize the mechanisms involved in the adaptation of P. vivax and P. vivax-like to their respective hosts and of different P. vivax populations.
Sample locations: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Comoros, India, Mauritania, Senegal and Turkey.
